RakWireless, one of the main manufacturer of LoRa devices, and TTN (The Things Network), major operator for LoRa, have worked together to develop a system for an easy and secured way to deploy LoRa gatways: ZPT (Zero-Touch Provisioning).
Aware of time it can take to provision a large number of gateways, inherent security problems, risk of errors, ZTP removes all these inconvenients. As soon as the gateway is build at factory, gateway is filled with proper settings for LoRa and network configuration. ZTP is based on shared identification system mTLS (mutual TLS). The manufacturer, RAKWireless, generates at factory a TLS certificate unique for each gateway. They are checked against the CA (Certificate Authority) of customer which warrants that only allowed gateways will be enable to connect with customer network.
To keep maximum compatibility with LoRa existing ecosystem, ZTP is based on existing tools of Basics Station Forwarder and CUPS (Configuration and Update Server).
Key points about ZTP:
- Easy to deploy: automate pre-configuration and provisionning of gateways, speed up and simplify installation.
- Improved security: implements advanced security measures such as specific customer certificate, mutual identification with mTLS, so only allowed gateways will be able to connect on customer network.
- Scalability: allows large scale deployment, with also WisDM if needed, the online tool for monitoring and managing RakWireless gateways.
- Flexibility and Full Control: allows to pre-configure LNS settings but also other ones (network configuration, APN configuration,…) so you have full control and lot of flexibility in managing your IoT infrastructure.
- Efficient provisioning: gives an efficient security by removing any manual process, source of error and security risks.
It’ll be a very interesting feacture for operators wishing to deploy quickly, easily and with all security possible a LoRa network or industrials/companies creating a private LoRa network.
